Former Trump Campaign Chair Paul Manafort Boasts of VIP Treatment in Jail

Paul Manafort says he's being treated 'like a VIP' in jail Manafort treated as prison ‘VIP’ with his own bathroom, shower, and phone

Ex- Trump campaign chief Paul Manafort has left the jail where he recently boasted of being treated like a "VIP," and has landed in a new lockup with a new inmate outfit.

The cases are U.S. v. Manafort, 17-cr-201, U.S. District Court, District of Columbia (Washington), and 18-cr-83, U.S. District Court, Eastern District of Virginia (Alexandria).

Manafort's complaints about the jail conditions were the basis for a request to delay the trial. In a separate case pending in Alexandria, Virginia, he also faces bank fraud and tax-related charges.

In a Washington, D.C., court filing in which he described his jailing, Manafort had said he is kept in solitary confinement 23 hours a day.

Paul Manafort arrived at the jail in Alexandria, Virginia - the William G. Truesdale Adult Detention Center - Thursday morning, according to a spokesperson for the Alexandria Sheriff's Office. While Manafort was not required to wear a jail-issued uniform at Northern Neck Regional Jail where he was being housed until Thursday morning, Bertsch says all inmates at the jail in Alexandria are required to wear the dark green jail jumpsuits used at that facility. But within hours of the judge's order, attorneys for Manafort asked that their client remain at Northern Neck Regional Jail, citing "his safety", among other things, even though they had complained his detention there was hurting his defense. They claimed they needed more time to prepare their defense, and they pointed to the location of Manafort's jail as part of the problem. He denied Manafort's request to throw out from the trial evidence investigators had obtained from his apartment in Alexandria last July. Prosecutors said Wednesday in a court filing that Manafort had "unique privileges" there, including a larger-than-average cell, "his own bathroom and shower facility, his own personal telephone and his own work space to prepare for trial".

Though Manafort's lawyers have said he spends almost all of his days in solitary confinement, prosecutors described his living arrangements as a "private, self-contained living unit, which is larger than other inmates' units" with its own bathroom and shower.

The defense team also criticized Mueller's apparent use of personnel to monitor Manafort's non-privileged phone calls.

Prosecutors noted that US District Judge Amy Berman Jackson, who is overseeing the Washington, DC, case, ordered that Manafort "be afforded reasonable opportunity for private consultation with counsel". Regarding how he's prepared for trial, prosecutors heard him say on a taped call that he's reviewed all the evidence, met with his lawyers every day and has "all my files like I would at home", the filing says. Phone calls with him were limited to 10 minutes, and electronic communications were restricted, they said. "When the team takes the laptop from the jail, it reconnects to the internet and Manafort's emails are transmitted".

Hull said that when jail officials learned Manafort was communicating by email, his attorneys were told to stop the practice.

Separately, in Washington federal court, prosecutors building a second criminal case against Manafort disclosed their allegation that the longtime lobbyist's foreign lobbying violations date to the 1980s.
