Sri Lanka players celebrate the fall of a South African wicket during day four of the second Test in Colombo on 23 July 2018.

After being outshone by the off-spinners Akila Dananjaya and Dilruwan Perera in the first innings, Herath showed his class to close out the match and series with 6/98 off 32.5 overs.

South Africa captain Faf du Plessis top scored with 48 runs.

In the second innings, both the openers of Sri Lanka, Danushka Gunathilaka and Dimuth Karunaratne, got half-centuries.

Left-arm orthodox spinner Keshav Maharaj claimed the best test innings figures by a South African bowler since the country's readmission to worldwide cricket in the second match against Sri Lanka at Sinhalese Sports Club grounds on Saturday.

As play resumed on day two, Sri Lanka's last wicket pair of Akila Dananjaya and Herath frustrated the Proteas by extending their stand to 73 runs in 140 deliveries, a new record for the tenth wicket in tests between these two countries.

Karunaratne was unbeaten on 59 at stumps with Angelo Mathews on 12.

Dananjaya was left stranded on 43 not out, his career best score.

South Africa once again proved their weakness against off-spin that saw Perera finish with figures of 4 for 40 to go with his match bag of ten at Galle.
