He said Monday about 300 of them had managed to get down the mountain.

The volcanic Mount Rinjani, Indonesia's second-highest volcano with a height of 3,726 metres, is famous for its natural beauty and a popular destination among tourists and mountain climbers.

Deputy Head of Mission Zamshari Sahaharan at the Malaysian Embassy in Jakarta said they were encouraging all Malaysian who knew tourists in Lombok to contact consular officials.

"Thirteen people have died, hundreds of people were injured and thousands of homes were damaged in the quake in East Lombok".

He said: "The main focus now is evacuation and rescue".

Two trails on the volcano became impassable following the significant eruption.

"As soon as we felt the tremor under our feet, we looked up and saw people falling. and boulders rolling down to the lake", said Suhas Yadav, one of three Indian visitors near the summit when the quake struck.




A magnitude 6.4 quake is considered strong and is capable of causing severe damage.

The quake also triggered a large landslide from Mount Rinjani.

The jolt was felt some 100 km (60 miles) away in the bustling holiday island of Bali, although there were no immediate reports of damage there.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake struck at a depth of 7 kilometers (4.4 miles).

"They calmed down and returned to their rooms once we explained the natural disaster did not trigger a tsunami".

Anci, a villager from near the quake epicenter, said he and his family spent the night in a makeshift tent, anxious that aftershocks could cause more buildings to collapse.

Indonesia's meteorology and geophysics agency has recorded more than 270 aftershocks.

In December 2004, a massive 9.1-magnitude quake off Sumatra triggered a tsunami that killed 230,000 people in a dozen countries.
