No new findings in investigation report, say MH370 families

Malaysia Civil Aviation Chief Resigns After MH370 Probe Highlights Lapses MH370 news: Final report into Malaysia Airlines flight leaves families in TEARS | Daily Star

The final report into the mysterious disappearance of flight MH370 will be handed down by the Malaysian government this afternoon. Similarly, the plane's loss of communications before veering off track was more likely due to systems "being manually turned off or power interrupted to them" than a malfunction, it said.

The independent investigation report, released more than four years after the Beijing-bound aircraft disappeared from radar an hour into its departure from Kuala Lumpur, admitted the precise cause of the disappearance could still not be determined, but "the possibility of intervention by a third party cannot be excluded".

When pressed about what other information the team hoped to be able to find in the future, he said they needed to be able to provide some closure to the incident - that gripped the world's attention for months in 2014 and about which families are still hoping for news - and therefore published the report with the evidence on hand.

The MH370 story is etched in aviation history as the most freaky incident, how a Boeing 777 with 239 people onboard vanished under mysterious circumstances, unleashing never ending scenarios provided both by aviation experts and conspiracy theorists.

"The turn back could not be attributed to an anomalous system", said Kok.

"We can not establish if the aircraft was flown by anyone other than the pilot", he said.

Other theories disproved by the report included speculation that the plane's cargo, which included 4,566kg of mangosteens and 221kg of lithium-ion batteries, had sparked to cause a fire.

Nathan said that, for the families, this report did not mark the end of the search.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said Beijing had paid close attention to the MH370 investigation.

Meanwhile, a relative of a crew member on board MH370 who only wanted to be identified as Fong, said he was unsatisfied, disappointed and annoyed by the briefing as it only informed the next-of-kin of something "they already knew". They were qualified, well-rested and showed no signs of anxiety or stress, he said.

Newly elected Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad has said Malaysia would consider resuming the search for MH370 only if new clues come to light. But that search was called off after failing to locate the plane while scouring 125,000sq km of the Indian Ocean.

A 52-day surface search for MH370 covered an area of several million square miles in the Indian Ocean west of Australia, followed by an underwater search that mapped 274,000 square miles of seabed at depths of up to 20,000 feet. However, investigators say they are confident the aircraft was deliberately flown off course and into the Indian Ocean. What prompted Captain Zaharie Ahmad Shah or anyone else onboard to turn back the plane and veer off to the Southern Indian Ocean without indicating the reasons or distress to the ATC remains unanswered in the report released today.

Some say this could be down to a deliberate hijacking in which someone damaged the oxygen supply or some kind of accident that harmed the plane's mechanics and affect the plane's oxygen levels.

Pieces of aircraft debris found washed up on the coast of east Africa and the French island of Réunion, thousands of kilometers from the likely crash site, were confirmed to be from the Boeing Co.
