Tensions Mount as Zimbabwe’s Ruling Party Declared Winner of Parliamentary Election

Zimbabwe election: Both sides certain of winning Zimbabwe election: ZANU-PF wins parliamentary majority, electoral body says

On Wednesday, the election commission announced that the ruling ZANU-PF had taken majority of the seats in parliament, winning 109 out of 210 seats with 41 going to the opposition MDC and 58 yet to be allocated.

The commission said it would announce the results of Zimbabwe's presidential race, pitting President Emmerson Mnangagwa against opposition leader Nelson Chamisa, only after all the votes have come in from across the country. By Wednesday, he was declaring victory, thanking his supporters and saying his party has won the popular vote, without offering proof.

Once again, they had lost the battle for control of parliament and there seemed little chance that Nelson Chamisa - their charismatic party leader - could claim the presidency.

After burning tyres in the streets, scores of his supporters attacked riot police near the Zimbabwe Election Commission (ZEC) headquarters.

Voters traditionally pick a presidential candidate based on their party affiliation and the trend in the parliamentary election was expected to continue when results for the president are announced this week.

The ZEC "seeks to release results to buy time and reverse the people's presidential election victory", Chamisa said on his Twitter account.

Meanwhile, officials from the electoral commission were read the results from the parliamentary contest in a stuffy meeting room in the Rainbow Hotel.

But the dispute over the conduct of the elections and the subsequent violence has punctured the euphoria over the army's removal of longtime strongman Robert Mugabe last November and the hope that Zimbabwe might be entering a new era of democracy after decades of political repression and economic ruin.

The Commonwealth's observer mission said on Thursday Zimbabwe's security services used excessive force to break up protests in Harare over this week's presidential election.

A Harare-based political analyst with Zimbabwe Democracy Institute, Pedzisai Ruhanya, said the results released so far could be a reflection of the will of the people but were not ideal. The events left three people dead.

As results have yet to be officially announced by the ZEC sources counting the ballots have said it is "close".

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission is by law given up to five days to release the results.

Mr Chamisa has won most urban centres. "A lot of the protesters I've spoken to say, 'We don't need to see any more". We've more votes than ED [Emmerson Dambudzo].

Pfigu said he was optimistic on election day for the country's first vote without Mugabe, who ruled for almost four decades, on the ballot.

At this crucial time, I call on everyone to desist from provocative declarations and statements.

"We have won this one together".

The opposition alleges the elections have irregularities, saying voting results were not posted outside one-fifth of polling stations as required by law.

"It is imperative that the results process is credible and transparent, with a full breakdown by polling station so that confidence in the outcome can be assured", Brok said.

He accused Zanu-PF of trying to "manipulate" the results, called V11 forms.
