Kohli said the lower order and tail gave him ample support, building his confidence.

The joy on his face, when he reached his century was so evident, that he kissed his wedding ring dedicating it to his wife, Anushka Sharma.

India captain Virat Kohli completed a notable personal milestone at Edgbaston on Thursday when he scored his first Test hundred in England.

The effort was just 13 shy of England's 287 in the first innings.

Virat's dominance can be seen in the stats as R Ashwin got out at 169 after that visitors added 109 runs in which Shami, Ishant and Umesh added 8 runs.

Early on day 2, Sam Curran's wicket was taken by Mohammed Shammi to end England's innings at 287 runs.

The opener managed only to push the ball down into his crease off back-foot defence, then onto his foot before it trickled back onto the base of the stumps.

But Kohli hit back, taking advantage of being dropped twice in the slips with a magnificent 149 before being last man out - to the controversially recalled Adil Rashid - having taken India to within 13 runs of England.

He claimed three wickets in eight balls as he found some movement.

With India suffering a collapse to rival England's from the previous day - losing five wickets for 50 runs - Kohli once again showed his skill with a fantastic century.

Broad plays the first ball towards deep point for a single. India got off to a near ideal start with the opening duo of Murali Vijay (20) and Shikhar Dhawan (26) putting on a 50-run stand.

In a gripping hour after lunch, England all-rounder Ben Stokes took the wickets of Ajinkya Rahane (15) and Dinesh Karthik (0) in consecutive overs.

It became 54-2 in three balls as number three batsman KL Rahul (4) played a loose shot and diverted a thick inside edge onto his stumps. However, the entire scenario changed after Sam Curran was introduced into the attack by Joe Root. It then got even better for England as Curran, who was just four when his bowling partner Anderson started playing for England, had Dhawan (26 )caught behind by Malan.

Things could have been worse as three balls later, Kohli (on 0*) edged Anderson to Jos Buttler at gully with the fielder failing to latch onto a tough chance despite putting in a fine dive.
