Iran FM says Trump, Mohammed Bin Salman, Netanyahu are ‘isolated’

SANCTIONS Iran gives conditions to stage talks with US President Trump reimposes sanctions to levy economic pressure on Iran

Trump declared the landmark 2015 agreement had been "horrible", leaving the Iranian government flush with cash to fuel conflict in the Middle East.

The sanctions that went into effect on Tuesday target Iranian access to United States banknotes and key economic sectors including cars and carpets.

Months of uncertainty surrounding the sanctions have already further hurt Iran's economy. "We would like to see a change in the regime behavior, and I think the Iranian people are looking for the same thing".

Iran´s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif told reporters the global reaction to Trump´s move showed that the USA was diplomatically "isolated", but acknowledged the sanctions "may cause some disruption".

President Hassan Rouhani's administration also replaced the Central Bank governor and took other measures to shore up the national currency.

The US has long designated Iran as the world's foremost state sponsor of terrorism, Pompeo noted Sunday, adding that the Islamic Republic can not expect to be treated as an equal in the global community until it halts such activities. Iran says it will continue to abide by the deal for now, if other countries can help protect it from the economic impact of Washington's decision to pull out. Its currency the rial has lost nearly two-thirds of its value in six months. The new rules mean exchange bureaus will reopen after a disastrous attempt to fix the value of the rial in April backfired spectacularly with corrupt traders making a fortune out of a mushrooming black market.

President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Monday restricting purchases of dollar banknotes by Iran, preventing the government from trading gold and other precious metals and blocking the nation from selling or acquiring various industrial metals.

European Union diplomatic chief Federica Mogherini said the bloc, as well as Britain, France and Germany, deeply regretted the move by Washington.

In a joint statement on Monday from Britain, France, Germany and the European Union as a bloc, they said: "We deeply regret the reimposition of sanctions by the U.S".

He also praised the "most biting sanctions ever imposed" and said they would "ratchet up to another level" in November.

Many large European firms are leaving Iran for fear of United States penalties, and Trump warned of "severe consequences" for firms and individuals that continued to do business with Iran.

While the penalties were expected, they drew fresh condemnation from European allies who are standing by the 2015 nuclear accord - known as the JCPOA - that Trump quit in May. "That is not going to happen".

There is a new confidence in Washington's foreign policy.

"There will be pressure because of sanctions, but we will overcome this with unity".

There have been rumors that Trump and Rouhani could meet in NY in September on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly - though Rouhani reportedly rejected USA overtures for a meeting at last year's event.

Severe reporting restrictions have made it impossible to verify the swirl of claims coming through social media.
