At least 29 children died and 30 children were injured in a Saudi coalition airstrike in Yemen, the International Committee of the Red Cross said.

The International Committee of the Red Cross said medics in the Yemeni city of Saada, where the attack took place, had received the bodies of the children, all of them under 15 years of age.

"Under the global humanitarian law, civilians must be protected during conflict", it added.

The rebel-run Al Masirah TV gave a different casualty toll, saying the attack killed 39 people and wounded 51, mainly children.

The coalition entered Yemen's civil war more than three years ago to fight northern Houthi rebels who seized power away from Yemen's internationally recognized government.

Saudi Arabia shot down the missile, with debris killing a Yemeni man and wounding 11 others, the coalition said.

Colonel Turki al-Malki, a spokesman for the Saudi-led coalition, said the missile strike was aimed at a "legitimate target".

ICRC said one of the hospitals it supports was treating the wounded.

They say their missile attacks on the kingdom are in retaliation for air raids on Yemen by the Western-backed coalition.

Col al Maliki said that the coalition targeted the Houthi militia members who were inside the bus and said that they were the planners and operators of the missiles launch pads.

Following the strike, the United States, which largely supports the coalition's campaign, issued a statement.

State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said the U.S. was "concerned" by reports of an attack resulting in civilian deaths.

Abu Muzahem, a resident of Dahyan, was working building a house when the air strike hit the market on Thursday morning.

Houthi media broadcast what appears to be graphic scenes of the aftermath, depicting children drenched in blood and burned black by the blast.

"The air strikes often target civilians in Saada, so we appeal the worldwide community to intervene to stop the Saudis killing them".

"We call on the Saudi-led coalition to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation into the incident", she said.

The Saudi government issued a statement on August 9 and described the strike as "a legitimate military action" and was "conducted in conformity with the worldwide humanitarian law".

Impoverished Yemen, on the southern tip of the Arabian Peninsula, is now in the world's worst humanitarian crisis, with more than 22.2 million people in need of assistance.

The Houthis have fired a number of ballistic missiles at the Saudi capital, Riyadh, and other cities.

The coalition denied responsibility for those attacks. We urge all parties to agree to an immediate cessation of hostilities, return to the negotiation table to commit to a ceasefire and cooperate with the U.N. Special Envoy Martin Griffiths.
