Current and former U.S. presidents led tributes from across the political divide following the death of senator John McCain yesterday.

Barack took to Twitter to share a statement from him and wife Michelle Obama to honor John's "patriotic obligation" to the United States.

The giant of the Senate and Vietnam War veteran died one day after the McCain family announced that he would be discontinuing medical treatment for brain cancer, stating that the "progress of disease and the inexorable advance of age" had rendered "their verdict".

"Last summer, Senator John McCain shared with Americans the news our family already knew: He had been diagnosed with an aggressive glioblastoma, and the prognosis was serious". Born into a storied Navy family, he spent his entire life in service to his country, including 22 years in the Navy, five and a half of which were spent under the boots of North Vietnamese communists in a Hanoi prison.

"I was with my father at his end, as he was with me at my beginning", she wrote. He was larger than life. "May he rest in peace".

Cindy appeared on The View with her daughter in February, where she defended her husband against criticism from President Donald Trump.

In a Sports Illustrated piece he wrote previous year, Fitzgerald wrote that he would tell his sons "Senator John McCain will be revered and respected for as long as the United States of America has a place in this world, and his legacy will outlive us all". John McCain was a man of deep conviction and a patriot of the highest order. Bush said. "Some voices are so vibrant, it is hard to think of them stilled".

"And to me, he was a friend whom I'll deeply miss. Thank you", Cindy wrote on Friday.
