Aussie underdog beats tennis great Federer in spectacular US Open showdown

Second-seeded Federer, who won the last of his five US Open titles back in 2008, took on 55th-ranked Australian John Millman under the lights on Arthur Ashe Stadium while Djokovic, victor in NY in 2011 and 2015, tackled Joao Sousa.

He is the first Australian to defeat Federer in a grand slam match since Pat Rafter in 1999.

"I'm probably in a little bit of disbelief", Millman, 29, said after three hours and 35 minutes in the cauldron of Arthur Ashe Stadium.

WHAT IT MEANS: We're one step closer to a much-anticipated Djokovic-Roger Federer quarterfinal, which would be their 47 meeting on the ATP World Tour (Djokovic holds a slight 24-22 advantage) and their seventh at the US Open. "I still don't feel old but at the same time there is a biological clock that doesn't work in your favour like it does when you're 20".

"I managed to play on some of the biggest courts now: Wimbledon Centre Court and Australian Open, Rod Laver Arena".

"I've got a lot of respect for Roger".

But Millman knows there's no friends on court when playing for a US Open quarter-final berth.

The victor will play Novak Djokovic, who easily accounted Joao Sousa of Portugal 6-3, 6-4, 6-3 earlier in the day.

" I'm not 21 any more".

Millman, ranked 55 in the world, capitalised on some sloppy serving from an under-par Federer to secure victory with the time approaching 1am in NY and move into a quarter-final clash with another former US Open victor, Novak Djokovic.

"You don't get an opportunity to hit around the net post very often".

That remains Nishikori's best Grand Slam showing.

Nishikori could end up fighting for a semi-final berth against Croatian Marin Cilic, who beat him in the 2014 final.

He reached the quarterfinals for an 11th consecutive appearance in NY as he bids for a third US Open championship and 14th Grand Slam trophy.

The final set saw them exchange one break each as it again went to a tiebreaker, but this time the Aussie reeled off four straight points as Federer double-faulted twice in succession to earn five match points, claiming a stunning upset victory at the third attempt.

Both Nishikori and Djokovic missed last year's US Open with arm injuries.
