Kyrgios was trailing 3-0 in the second set, having thrown away the first on a wild second-serve double-fault, when Lahyani left his chair to beg the Australian to start trying for the sake of the paying crowd and to avoid being sanctioned - again - for not giving his best effort.

Kyrgios went on to pocket 19 of the next 25 games to win 4-6, 7-6 (8/6), 6-3, 6-0, setting up a third round clash with five-time US Open champion Federer on Saturday. Kyrgios' opponent though was unamused of the whole situation when he later reviewed the footage in which the umpire Lahyani had apparently siad, "I want to help you".

Kyrgios said: "I'm not sure it was encouragement".

But all said and done, it looks like Lalyani's pep-talk did him good as Nick Kyrgios went on to win the match. Oh, I'm not feeling so well.' Go back up to the chair.

"I know what I was doing out there wasn't good". The only thing he can tell him is pay attention, because if you continue like this, I'm going to give you a warning", said the 27-year-old, "They can tell him from the chair. "I know this is not you".

Meanwhile, Herbert told reporters during the post-match interview that he was convinced the umpire 's intervention had an impact on the result and said the umpire "should stay in his chair".

"Well, you'll never have her", Kyrgios said before breaking Herbert early in the third set to take command of the match.

"I don't know yet if it would have changed something. I just saw that Mohamed went down at the chair, I was a little bit surprised", he said in his press conference.

The USTA, already under siege over a succession of rules blunders this grand slam, was also understood to be unimpressed with Lahyani's conduct and investigating the incident.

Kyrgios also said that he does not believe Lahyani deserves a punishment and that chair umpires in Shanghai and Cincinnati did this as well when Kyrgios was acting up.

However, Herbert said he was "even more upset" about the USTA's statement and said the association is "clearly taking us for fools". The umpire was like, "Nick, you can't be doing this".

Tennis's most mercurial talent is pumped for the pair's third-round US Open showdown on the sport's biggest stage in NY on Saturday (Sunday AEST). "I got pissed off", said 2011 and 2015 champion Djokovic. I think this was not his job.

As Herbert put it: "Just sometimes he's mentally not here". "He said he liked me", Kyrgios, who next plays Roger Federer, said with a laugh. "Everyone is entitled to an opinion but I can assure you it wasn't coaching".

"This was always the Grand Slam that I didn't play my best ever".

"He was down there for too long".

"It's a conversation, and a conversation can change your mindset".

Herbert wanted Lahyani to be fined but, although that has not happened, he will at least be pleased with the acknowledgement that Lahyani did go too far.

"That's why it won't happen again and everybody knows that".
