Doug Ducey's appointment on Tuesday of former senator Jon Kyl to succeed the late senator John McCain puts a sometime critic of President Trump on track to join the Senate at a time when the Republican Party has tightened its embrace of him.

The appointment was tweeted by McCain's widow, Cindy.

"It's a great tribute to John that he is prepared to go back into public service to help the state of Arizona", she said.

Garcia said he would have selected someone like Cindy McCain or former Attorney General Grant Woods, someone who was more in the mold of the late senator and who might be more willing to stand up to Trump. The governor's spokesperson said last week that Ducey would wait until the services for McCain had concluded to select someone to replace the Arizona senator.

Kyl, 76, was the second highest ranking Republican in the Senate when he retired in 2013.

But he only committed to serve until January 2019, raising the prospect of requiring Ducey to again appoint a replacement until the seat is up for re-election in November 2020. The victor there will serve the remainder of McCain's term, until the 2022 election.

The Kyl pick could allow Ducey to have his uncontroversial caretaker - and his long-term, far-right Senate appointment, too. Son Jon was first elected to the U.S. House in 1987 representing Arizona's 4 district, where he served until his election to the U.S. Senate in 1995. Recently, Kyl was named the Trump administration's "sherpa" to ensure Brett Kavanaugh's nomination sails through the confirmation process. "Now Sen. Kyl can cast a vote for Kavanaugh's nomination".

The conservative former pol will pad Republicans' narrow margin in the Senate. The seat has been held by two men who were heralded as giants of the Senate: McCain took the seat once held by Sen.

The replacement for the late John McCain in the Senate is now shepherding Trump's nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to the U.S. Supreme Court. John Kyl to replace the late Sen.

He added that he doesn't "really have a relationship with President Trump" and only met him once, several months ago.

"There is no one in Arizona with the stature of Senator Jon Kyl".

U.S. Rep. Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.) congratulated Kyl in a statement saying, "I look forward to working with him in the Arizona delegation".

Representative Steny Hoyer, the No. 2 Democrat in the House of Representatives, said given that the Arizona governor was "not going to appoint somebody who is going to vote with us, it's a pretty good appointment".
