Kaepernick is best known as the first NFL player to kneel during the pre-match national anthem as a protest against racism, a campaign initially shunned by brands fearful of being seen to take sides.

Now Nike has added him to a line-up of athletes to feature in a new ad campaign to mark the 30th anniversary of its "Just Do It' slogan".

The quarterback appears alongside the message: "Believe in something".

On Tuesday afternoon, President Trump weighed in. As expected, there is now a whole slew of social media posts featuring people dramatically burning their sneakers, blowtorching their clothes, throwing Nike items into the trash, and cutting up their socks.

Nike's new ad campaign not only featured the footballer but also hinted at Kaepernick's political stand with their tagline: "Believe in something".

San Francisco 49ers safety Eric Reid (35) and quarterback Colin Kaepernick (7) kneel during the national anthem before an NFL football game against the Los Angeles Rams in Santa Clara, Calif. on September 12, 2016.

Williams declined to answer whether she would take part in similar protests in tennis given the chance, saying: "I think everyone has a choice to do what they choose to do".

Critics have burned Nike trainers and clothing in protest at the decision to use Kaepernick in the campaign. "Even if it means sacrificing everything" above the trademark Nike swoosh. The NFL team owners passed a rule this offseason that gives players who would kneel the option of remaining in the locker room during the anthem.

Nike originally signed Kaepernick in 2011 and has kept paying him even though the company has not used him at all in the past two years. Nike provides all National Football League teams with game-day uniforms and sideline apparel that bears the swoosh logo.

Former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick's new sponsorship deal with Nike has prompted calls to boycott the athletic brand, and received an equal outpouring of support online.

Kaepernick, who filed a grievance in October 2017 against the NFL, last played in the league during the 2016 season for the San Francisco 49ers.
