Tues., Sept 6, 1:16 am- Tropical Depression Gordon was expected on Thursday to dump more heavy rains that could cause flooding in central US states as Hurricane Florence, a monster Category 3 storm, churned toward Bermuda, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) said. We'll have to keep an eye on rain totals because this system will certainly produce heavy rain in parts of in but we should wait another 12-24 hours before we can confidently say just where. The storm was moving to the northwest at 12 miles per hour. The center of Gordon is expected to track northwest today and eventually the weather will quiet down in Alabama. A flash flood watch is in effect along and north of U.S. 50 and east of USA 231.

"It was just very bad", she said, adding that the sounds were nearly indistinguishable from the storm's howling winds.

Gordon continues to weaken and spin over central Mississippi.

The storm made landfall late Tuesday and is blamed for the death of a baby in a mobile home in Pensacola, Florida. Neighbor Amanda Ray told the Pensacola News Journal that she heard a crack and a scream as the limb fell around 9 p.m. Tuesday.

Barradas said he ran back in his home to get a flashlight, but by the time he got to the neighbor's home the baby had stopped crying. The Escambia County Sheriff's office posted on its Facebook page that responding deputies discovered that the child had been killed.

The child's age and identity were not released.

Rain spun around the storm's center in the Jackson, Mississippi, area Wednesday afternoon.

The center predicted total rain amounts of 4-8 inches (10-20 centimeters) in the Florida panhandle and parts of Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, Missouri, Iowa and IL. New Orleans braced for flooding, but in the end got only a glancing blow. Boaters and fishermen returned to marinas after having fled inland a day before.

Along the Gulf Coast on Wednesday, where many schools and roads were closed, the authorities signaled that typical daily life would resume quickly.

"It was fine, just like a thunderstorm", said Pascagoula resident Trey Casey, who had been given the day off from work in anticipation of more serious damage.

"This is the price you pay to look at this handsome water and enjoy the coast", Pascagoula resident Richard Whitlock said as he raked leaves and branches from his yard overlooking the Gulf.

"We ducked a punch", said Mayor Andrew Gilich of Biloxi, whose office noted that he is a former boxer.
