BA probes theft of customers’ financial details from website and mobile app

British Airways disclosed on September 7 that it was the victim of a data breach that exposed details on 380,000 customers.

Customers who bought tickets from British Airways in the past few weeks may have had their personal information stolen, the airline said on Thursday.

British Airways promised compensation on Friday to about 380,000 customers affected by a data breach this summer. "We advise every client who thinks that this incident might be related to his bank or credit card provider and to follow their instructions", BA notes.

British Airways has notified the police after the theft of customer data from its website and mobile app.

While reacting to the unfortunate incidence, the airline's chairman Alex Crux apologized for the "the disruption" that the criminal activity may have caused its teeming customers. "The moment that actual customer data had been compromised, that's when we began immediate communication to our customers". However, the stolen data did not include travel or passport details.

To make matters worse, if BA is verified not to have taken appropriate measures to secure customer data, it can face a fine of up to $650 million due to the infamous GDPR regulation in place. BA claims it did not store CVV numbers-that's banned under global standards, the BBC points out-so card details were probably "intercepted, rather than harvested from a BA database".

A spokesperson for the Information Commissioner's Office said: "British Airways has made us aware of an incident and we are making enquiries".

British Airways will provide further updates when appropriate.

"I was speaking to a friend who is a gold card holder, and he says they treat him incredibly well".

Senior Security Lead at cybersecurity firm X Infotech Jurijs Rapoports told IE that this is not the first time that a company has suffered such a large scale data breach and that several airlines have already been hacked before.

BA informed customers affected by the attack yesterday, Cruz said. The attack comes only 15 months after BA was hit by a massive computer system failure at London's Heathrow and Gatwick airports. The airline said it was also working with law enforcement on the matter.

In May 2017, the airline was hit by a "major IT systems failure" that brought its operations to a grinding halt in the United Kingdom and stranded tens of thousands of passengers over the course of several days.
