Papadopoulos Sentenced To 14 Days In Prison

Former Trump Aide George Papadopoulos Has been Sentenced For Lying to the FBI and he Throws Trump Under the Bus George Papadopoulos: ex-Trump adviser jailed for 14 days for lying to FBI

He is the first campaign adviser to be sentenced in connection with Special Council Robert Mueller's ongoing probe into alleged Russian interference in the 2016 election.

Prosecutors say Mifsud arranged a meeting in London cafe between Papadopoulos and a young woman he falsely described as Russian President Vladimir Putin's niece.

U.S. District Judge Randolph Moss said Papadopoulos' deception was "not a noble lie" and said he had lied because he wanted a job in the Trump administration and didn't want to jeopardize that possibility by being tied to the Russian Federation investigation.

But he said incarceration was necessary because Papadopoulos had lied on a matter of grave national interest and the public needed to understand that lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation is a serious matter.

During his sentencing hearing Papadopoulos said his case should serve as a warning to others.

"14 days for $28 MILLION - $2 MILLION a day, No Collusion. A great day for America!" tweeted the President. That probe was later taken over by Mueller. The professor told Papadopoulos the Russians had "dirt" on Trump's Democratic presidential rival Hillary Clinton in the form of "thousands of emails".

George Papadopoulos, the Trump campaign adviser who triggered the Russian Federation investigation, was sentenced to 14 days in prison Friday by a judge who said he had placed his own interests above those of the country.

Prosecutors said in a court filing that Papadopoulos' "lies negatively affected the FBI's Russian Federation investigation, and prevented the FBI from effectively identifying and confronting witnesses in a timely fashion".

But he said he was moved by what he viewed as Mr. Papadopoulos's "genuine remorse".

"The defendant did not provide 'substantial assistance, ' and much of the information provided by the defendant came only after the government confronted him with his own emails, text messages, internet search history, and other information it had obtained via search warrants and subpoenas", the court filing said.

Mifsud reportedly surfaced briefly at a conference in Washington, D.C., in February 2017, and at the time told the Federal Bureau of Investigation that he never said anything to Papadopoulos about Clinton's emails, that he didn't even know about the emails, and that he wasn't a Russian operative. Instead, they said, Papadopoulos "misled investigators to save his professional aspirations and preserve a perhaps misguided loyalty to his master". Mifsud's current whereabouts are unknown, and Papadopoulos has denied telling anyone else from the president's campaign about Mifsud's claims.

Thomas Breen, Papadopoulos's lawyer, admitted that his client had been "naive" and "a fool", but he also cast blame on President Trump.

He said Mr Trump had hampered the inquiry by calling it a "witch hunt" and "fake news". "Although Mifsud has traveled many times to Russia and has contacts with Russian academics, his closest public ties are to Western governments, politicians, and institutions, including the CIA, FBI and British intelligence services", he wrote. He said at least a dozen times he learned of it before joining the campaign, according to court documents. "I don't know him", Trump said. Sessions has said the opposite while testifying under oath.
