Serena Williams fined $17,000 for U.S. Open final conduct

Serena Williams Fell To Naomi Osaka In A Tense US Open Final Serena's battle with umpire ignites debate on Twitter

After a heated argument with an umpire during the final of the US Open which quickly spiralled into something much more, Serena Williams has now been fined $17,000 for her actions during the match that saw her docked a game against Naomi Osaka. "This is also a prime example of how racism and sexism are two of the biggest obstacles that black women in America face".

Williams put an arm around Osaka's shoulder and told the crowd: "I know you guys were here rooting, and I was rooting, too, but let's make this the best moment we can. They are calling me a cheater.' That's how she experienced it".

From there, Williams summoned the tournament referee to the court and said male tennis players were not punished for similar offences.

Williams burst into tears, trying to correct her unfortunate performance during the match, in which she failed to achieve her twenty-fourth Grand Slam title.

USTA president Katrina Adams issued a statement after the match, making a point of noting Williams' "class and sportsmanship" and calling her "an inspiration to me, personally, and a credit to our sport, win or lose". She was telling me to think of it as just another match and then I would yell at her, 'Are you insane? "He's never taken a game from a man because they said 'thief'".

Overshadowed by the controversy was the fact that Osaka played brilliantly, with her inexperience perhaps helping her weather the weird circumstances of the second set of her 6-2, 6-4 win. "If you ever see me walking down the hall, look the other way because you're out of control".

This was not the first time in this year's tournament that officials had been called sexist.

"Earlier in the tournament we saw Alize Cornet being given a code violation for changing her shirt on court and then in the same tournament Mohamed Lahyani gets down from his chair to talk to Nick Kyrgios and persuade him not to give up on a match".

Williams's assertion that female players are policed more than male players is hard to prove.

Most of the sport's infamous brats have been men, and they have often been punished for bad behaviour.

Fabio Fognini, another serial offender, was ejected from the United States Open previous year for making crude remarks in Italian about a female chair umpire during a first-round match.

Williams has history here.

In 2004, Williams lost a quarterfinal against Jennifer Capriati in large part because of a spate of erroneous overrules by the chair umpire Mariana Alves.

In 2009, in a semifinal against Kim Clijsters, Williams was called for a foot fault by the lineswoman Shino Tsurubuchi and responded with a threat to shove a tennis ball down Tsurubuchi's throat.

BBC tennis presenter Sue Barker said: "The umpire was following the rules by the book but Serena has a point".

Williams approached Ramos after the call.

After the call, Twitter lit up with reactions.

But when it came to Naomi being officially declared the victor during the trophy ceremony, the crowd started booing. So, yeah, I just thought, like, no matter what happens outside of the court, for me, when I step on the court, it's just about tennis.' Is there one word or one phrase that really summarize this experience of being the US Open champion? How dare you insinuate that I was cheating?
