Aides to President Donald Trump believe they have the search for the anonymous author of the New York Times op-ed that shook the political world down to a few individuals, a source close to the White House told said.

"In that moment there was a sense of profound alarm in the Pentagon leadership that, my God, one tweet and we have reliable information that the North Koreans are going to read this as 'an attack is imminent, '" Woodward said.

Trump is still "obsessed" with finding the person, though he is being counselled by White House chief of staff John Kelly to let it pass, to avoid bringing more attention to the claims in the op-ed.

However, allegations that Mattis is intervening regularly to avert national security disasters have once again raised the question of whether military commanders possess the authority to refuse a direct order from the President under certain circumstances.

The White House press secretary, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, called on the "coward" who wrote the piece to "do the right thing and resign".

Trump has dismissed the book, which will be released Tuesday, as "total fiction".

Woodward also revealed in his book that Trump's tweet in January about the size of the United States' nuclear button was meant to intimate Kim and part of the president's strategy of being tough on the North Korean leader. In her own op-ed in The Washington Post, U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley called the anonymous author's aims "very unsafe", because they would sow "mistrust among the thousands of government workers who do their jobs honestly every day". Cohn was reported to have told a colleague Trump did not notice it was gone.

"All these people in the media who are always talking about who is and who is not telling the truth, they will print the words of a liar in a heartbeat", Paterson said.

Swift denials followed from others in the Trump administration. Anyone who has the ability to think independently and logically knows that everything President Trump has proposed since becoming President is a GOOD thing and is in keeping with his campaign promises, so anything the author proposed that was contrary to what the president wants, must be bad. "In the end, this op-ed is about impeachment", said Caputo. "The root of the problem is the president's amorality", anonymous opinion piece writes.

"It probably won't take long for us to find out who wrote it".

Beyond the anecdotes about his aides, Mr. Trump has pushed back on quotes attributed to him.

According to Woodward, the tweet was never sent out after backchannel communications with North Korea made clear that the nation would regard the move as a sign the USA was preparing to wage war on the North.

"I have a golf pro who's mentally retarded", Trump told Stern.
