Senior official says there are 'dozens' of others working against Trump

Senior Donald Trump administration official flays president in anonymous New York Times op-ed essay Whodunit? Denials from Key Officials Pour in as Hunt for Anonymous NYT Op-Ed Writer Begins

Woodward's book is based on "deep background" interviews, which he defines in his book as interviews where "all the information could be used but I would not say who provided it".

On the eve of its release, the president took to Twitter with a preemptive round of attacks, denouncing as fiction Woodward's reconstruction of scenes in which frustrated aides scramble to contain the mercurial president's reckless impulses.

The 75-year-old Woodward said that at a National Security Council meeting a year into Trump's presidency, when he was complaining about the cost of posting thousands of USA troops in foreign countries, Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis had to explain the rationale to him.

The denials from the Pentagon followed Woodward's appearance on NBC's Today Show Monday in which he said that Mattis, a retired Marine general, and retired Marine Gen. John Kelly, the White House Chief of Staff, were "not telling the truth" in rejecting how they were quoted in the book.

Manning also told defense reporters at the Pentagon Monday that Woodward, the acclaimed veteran journalist of the Washington Post, never gave Mattis or the Pentagon a heads-up on what he was about to publish to seek comment. In the book, which has been previewed by The Washington Post, Kelly is said to have called the president an "idiot", while Mattis reportedly compared Trump's intellect to that of a "fifth or sixth grader". "It's 11, ' I said 'I'm four minutes away", recalled Woodward.

Press secretary Sarah Sanders slams the media for giving the New York Times op-ed so much attention, arguing the press should be focusing on more important issues.

"You can, in an nearly microscopic way, establish what occurred - and that's what I've done in this book".

Trump's economic adviser Gary Cohn removed papers from the president's desk to stop him from withdrawing from KORUS, according to Woodward's reporting.

Like the rest of the establishment media, as we head into the midterms, Woodward seems desperate to keep everyone's eye off of the results of Trump's management style, which have been an unqualified success.

The White House last week called Woodward's new book "nothing more than fabricated stories".

To the surprise of no one, Woodward does not and is not asked to explain why, if Trump's management style has created a "constitutional crisis", the country is doing so well.

In the piece, an unnamed senior administration official says people within the White House are actively "thwarting Mr. Trump's more misguided impulses".

"Mattis says to him, 'We're doing this to prevent World War III, '" Woodward said.

"The fact that that's actually being honestly discussed is ridiculous, and frankly it's insulting" to the people who voted for Trump, Sanders said. "If that person had come to me while I was working on this book or if it were someone I interviewed I would say, 'I need specifics.' The building blocks of journalism, of truth, are specific incidents".
