Longtime producer of the popular CBS News program "60 Minutes", Jeff Fager, stepped down from his position on Wednesday, after violating "company policy", new memos show.

"Big Brother" host Julie Chen returned to the CBS show Thursday night, days after her husband, Leslie Moonves, departed as CBS CEO and chairman amid allegations of sexual misconduct and sexual assault.

Asked on "CBS This Morning" whether she felt threatened by the message, Duncan said, "I did, and it's even hard to say that today".

Prior to his firing, Chen released a statement defending her husband against the many sexual assault accusations being brought against him.

Fager said in a separate statement that the allegations in the New Yorker are "false" and that the decision by CBS was unrelated.

A CBS News reporter has spoken out about the threatening text message she received from former 60 Minutes executive producer Jeff Fager, who was sacked on Wednesday in the wake of recent accusations of sexual misconduct and fostering an abusive workplace. Fager has denied the claims. Rhodes was then brought in as news president, taking over full management of the news division when Fager went back to exclusively running "60 Minutes".

"60 Minutes" is the most popular and powerful news broadcast on television, and Fager is only the second person to lead it during its 50 years of history.

CBS News reported Wednesday that correspondent Jericka Duncan reached out to Fager on Sunday seeking his response to allegations made in a New Yorker story published earlier that day detailing allegations of him touching CBS employees inappropriately.

The two-paragraph internal memo from CBS News president David Rhodes, which was seen by Reuters, said that Fager's departure "is not directly related to the allegations surfaced in press reports, which continue to be investigated independently".

Quinnipiac University has rescinded Fager's Fred Friendly First Amendment Award, which he received in June, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Bill Owens, executive editor at "60 Minutes", will step in to manage the "60 Minutes" team while a search for a replacement is conducted.

The network also announced that it and Moonves would donate $20 million to organizations "that support the #MeToo movement and equality for women in the workplace". A $120 million financial exit package for Moonves will be withheld pending the results of the board's independent investigation.

The 36-year CBS veteran has been at the center of allegations that CBS's news division fostered a culture of harassment. "We need to be such a place".
