Florence plows inland, leaving five dead, states flooded

HURRICANE FLORENCE Hurricane Florence Could Kill 'A Lot Of People' As It Batters US Coast

Reports out of Wilmington, North Carolina, said that the outer bands of wind and rain from Florence, a Category 2 storm with 105 miles per hour winds, are hitting North Carolina.

Wilmington police tweeted that the father was transported to the hospital with unspecified injuries. Local media said the woman had suffered a heart attack.

Both the Trent and Neuse rivers overflowed their banks, flooding homes, stores and streets and trapping many people in their houses.

Florence's rain will reach 40 inches in some parts of the Carolina coasts, and gusty winds will send the ocean and rivers spilling into neighborhoods, forecasters said. Harris Teeter, a Kroger Co. subsidiary, announced closings for 24 stores in North Carolina and 18 stores in SC.

Over 60 people had to be pulled out of a collapsing motel in Jacksonville, North Carolina, and hundreds were saved as water levels rose.

As Florence moves further inland over the coming days, the storm is expected to gradually weaken.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol says that as the hurricane hit the coast overnight, officers "responded to 108 calls for service and 30 collisions".

The water starts at her feet, rising behind her to three feet and "coming up my shins towards my waist", then to six feet and finally to nine feet, dwarfing her as she warns of the storm surge. "If the number seems really insane high, you always have to have some suspicion until we can actually get out and verify it". "The combination of a risky storm surge and the tide will cause normally dry areas near the coast to be flooded by rising waters moving inland from the shoreline".

Officials in New Bern said over 100 people were rescued from floods and the downtown was under water by Friday afternoon.

Forecasters say "it can not be emphasized enough that the most serious hazard associated with slow-moving Florence is extremely heavy rainfall, which will cause disastrous flooding that will be spreading inland".

In southeastern coastal North Carolina into far northeastern SC up to 40 inches of rain could fall, producing "catastrophic flash flooding and prolonged significant river flooding", said the NHC. There are about 150 people waiting to be rescued.

The National Hurricane Center says Hurricane Florence has finally made landfall near Wrightsville, North Carolina.

"We aren't going to try to restore power for quite some time, probably", Outlaw, the mayor, said. But the hurricane had slowed to a crawl, drenching coastal communities for hours on end.

The NHC said the threat of tornadoes was increasing as Florence neared shore and South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster said the heavy rain could trigger landslides in the west of his state.

"Hurricanes normally come in and they go inland, which sucks the power out of them as they go over the land", he said.

About 1.7 million people in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia are under voluntary or mandatory evacuation orders and millions of others live in areas likely to be affected by the storm.
