A Palestinian attacker opened fire inside a West Bank industrial zone Sunday morning where Israelis and Palestinians work together, killing two Israelis and seriously wounding a third, the military said.

Conricus identified the gunman as a 23-year-old Palestinian from a West Bank village and said he was still at large.

Police initially suspected that the shooting may have been a revenge attack on the man's employers, but army spokesperson Lt. Col. Jonathan Conricus later called it a "terrorist attack" adding that other unspecified factors were involved.

A woman aged 54 was also found wounded, the medical services said.

At his weekly Cabinet meeting, Netanyahu said they had been killed "with great cruelty". The prime minister said he was certain the perpetrator would be caught and brought to justice.

The Palestinian militant group Hamas praised the attack, saying it was a "natural response to the crimes of the Israeli occupation", but it did not claim to be behind it.

The businesses in the Barkan Industrial Park, located near Ariel, employ some 8,000 people, approximately half of them Israelis and the other half Palestinians.

Advocates of Israeli settlement policies say the industrial zones are an example of the benefits Palestinians have under Israeli control, including much-needed employment to Palestinians.

Israeli troops take part in operations in the northern West Bank village of Shuweika, searching for a terrorist from the town who killed two Israelis and injured a third, on October 7, 2018.

"No way in our industrial zone", he said, describing an atmosphere of camaraderie in Barkan".

The army, however, said the alleged shooter was still employed at the site as of Sunday, but noted he had been away from work in recent days.

Last month, a Palestinian teenager stabbed to death the US-born settler Ari Fuld, a well-known pro-Israel advocate, at a shopping centre in Gush Etzion.

Mother Hava and relatives and friends mourn during the funeral of Kim Levengrond Yehezkel, aged 28, one of the two Israelis killed earlier in a terrorist attack, on October 7, 2018, in Rosh Haayin.

Most countries consider settlements that Israel has built on land occupied in the 1967 Middle East war as illegal.
