Wisconsin Republicans and Democrats react to Kavanaugh Confirmation to Supreme Court

Watch live: Final Senate vote on Kavanaugh nomination BREAKING: Brett Kavanaugh Confirmed to the U.S. Supreme Court | Trending

On Saturday, the Senate fight over Brett Kavanaugh's nomination to the Supreme Court finally came to a close with a vote from the floor.

By a vote of 50-48, the Senate gave a lifetime job to Kavanaugh, 53, after weeks of fierce debate over sexual violence, privilege and alcohol abuse that convulsed the nation just weeks before congressional elections on November 6.

Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan expressed concern Friday over the court's lack of a swing vote with Justice Anthony Kennedy's departure from the bench. Protesters confronted a man with a cutout of President Donald Trump who was in favor of Kavanaugh's confirmation; one attempted to rip the cutout's head off, KTVB reported.

He was being sworn in nearly immediately yesterday by Chief Justice John Roberts. Kavanaugh's confirmation has reinforced what we already knew: "Republicans want a Supreme Court willing to fight for corporations" rights as a "person, ' but not for the rights of workers to collectively bargain and earn a living wage", Ryan said in a statement. Police stood guard at the doors. After her allegation became public, other women came forward with accusations of wrongdoing.

Kavanaugh denies the allegation. The woman, Christine Blasey Ford, testified before the Senate.

"... Fueled with apparent pent-up anger about President Trump and the 2016 election", Kavanaugh said.

Trump watched the confirmation vote on a large-screen television tuned to Fox News in a wood-paneled cabin on the plane.

Trump called The Post from the White House residence on Saturday afternoon, shortly before the Senate held its final vote and before he jetted to Kansas for an evening campaign rally, where he was looking to take a victory lap.

Trump is seeking a legacy as the president who put a strongly conservative stamp on the court. An appellate court judge on the District of Columbia circuit for the past 12 years, he pushed for the Senate vote as hard as Republican leaders - not just to reach this capstone of his legal career, but in fighting to clear his name.

"I always thought that landslides were kind of boring anyways", Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said at a relatively subdued GOP press conference after the tight vote.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) took her message right to the hundreds of protestors gathered outside the Supreme Court building in Washington, D.C., on Saturday. On Thursday, almost 300 protesters, including comedian and actress Amy Schumer, were detained by Capitol Police during a demonstration.

Retired Justice John Paul Stevens, a Republican appointee, said on Thursday Kavanaugh's remarks in that hearing should disqualify him from serving on the high court. Democrats hope that the roll call, exactly a month from elections in which House and Senate control are in play, will prompt infuriated women and liberals to stream to the polls to oust Republicans.

The partisan battle was also informed by multiple allegations of sexual assault against the recently sworn in justice, including from Palo Alto University Prof.

In August, after reviewing Judge Kavanaugh's record and meeting with him face-to-face, Brown announced his opposition.

Speaking after the vote, McConnell said the protests against Kavanaugh over the past several weeks have "turned our base on fire". "They both start with the proposition that the court's job is not to make law but to apply the Constitution and statutes as they were written, to the facts of a case", Risch's statement reads. He's declined to say that he wouldn't vote to overturn Roe v. Wade, instead calling it "settled law", and previous year he ruled that a teenage immigrant in federal custody shouldn't be allowed to terminate her pregnancy.
