"This morning, Florida's Gulf Coast and Panhandle and the Big Bend are waking up to unimaginable destruction", Gov. Rick Scott said.

Panama City, some 20 miles (32km) from Mexico Beach, has borne the brunt of the storm, as it downed trees, knocked power lines, tore off roofs, and splintered homes, some of which have collapsed.

"There are now 3 ROCA registrants in Tallahassee, Florida, 9 ROCA registrants in Panama City, Florida, 279 ROCA registrants in the state of Georgia, 36 ROCA registrants in the state of Alabama, and 60 ROCA registrants in the state of SC". With the flash flood watch we will need to be on the lookout for flood-prone areas to see rapidly rising water. "We worked all night in endangered circumstances".

"We had about 280 residents who made the decision not to evacuate", said Mexico Beach Administrator Tanya Castor. The area is known for its small beach towns, wildlife reserves and the state capital, Tallahassee.

Winds up to 155 miles per hour dashed homes into pieces in Mexico Beach, close to where Michael made landfall on Wednesday afternoon as a Category 4 storm. As the tropical storm continued to weaken it was still menacing the Southeast with heavy rains, blustery winds and possible spinoff tornadoes.

It swamped streets, bent trees, stripped away limbs and leaves, knocked out power, shredded awnings and sent other building debris flying.

At one point almost 400,000 people spread out across Florida, Alabama and Georgia were without power. The storm was the strongest to ever hit the Panhandle and the fourth Category 4 storm to hit the U.S.in the past 15 months.

"The wind that came through here was surreal".

As the storm continues to move up across the Appalachians and eventually off the Mid-Atlantic Coast and then out to sea, it will brush Southern New England.

"Next phase of recovery work - going into neighborhoods - providing for the needs of those impacted by the storm, providing resources for people".

- Power outages: 190,000 Florida customers and 32,000 Georgia customers without power. A storm surge of almost 8 feet was reported at Apalachicola. Winds will also be noticeable over Cape Cod and the Islands.

"According to the Registration of Canadians Abroad (ROCA) there are a total of 387 ROCA registrants are in areas where Tropical Storm Michael is anticipated to make landfall or have a potentially significant impact". The force of the winds made it the strongest hurricane to hit the continental United States since Hurricane Andrew barreled into South Florida in 1992.

It was the strongest storm to hit the continental U.S. since Hurricane Andrew in 1992, and left extensive damage in Panama City, where skies were still overcast hours after the gusty winds left town.

Briefing President Donald Trump at the White House, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) chief Brock Long said Michael was the most intense hurricane to strike the Florida Panhandle since 1851. "We can rebuild your house, but we cannot rebuild your life", Scott said at a press conference Tuesday, warning that "this storm can kill you".
