Saudis Vow To Retaliate With 'Greater Action' If Hit With Sanctions

Companies cut ties with Saudi Arabia over Jamal Khashoggi's disappearance Trump's Threats Over Missing Journo Send Saudi Stock Market Into Record Plunge

A White House aide said President Trump is serious when he says there'll be "severe punishment" if Saudi Arabia is found to be complicit in the disappearance.

"The Kingdom affirms its total rejection of any threats and attempts to undermine it, whether by waving economic sanctions, using political pressure, or repeating false accusations", the country said in a statement released by the Saudi Press Agency.

Saudi journalist and Washington Post contributor Khashoggi vanished on October 2 after entering the consulate to obtain documents for his upcoming marriage.

The apparent threat of economic retaliation from the world's top oil exporter came after a turbulent day on the Saudi stock exchange, which plunged as much as 7 per cent at one point.

Mr Khashoggi, a prominent critic of Riyadh and a USA resident, disappeared on 2 October after visiting the Saudi consulate.

US-Saudi relations have grown even stronger since Trump took office.

Journalists report from outside the Saudi Arabia's consulate in Istanbul, Sunday, Oct. 14, 2018.

On Thursday, Trump had said US relations with Saudi Arabia were "excellent" and he was reluctant to scuttle highly lucrative USA weapons deals with Riyadh.

Unlike a Washington Post op-ed she published earlier this week, which called on President Donald Trump to investigate Khashoggi's disappearance, Cengiz wrote frankly Saturday of her fiancé's possible death.

On Saturday, Trump expressed concern about Khashoggi's fate and lack of answers, so many days after the journalist disappeared.

Kudlow on "This Week" underscored Trump's saying that the U.S.is being "very tough" in its investigation of what happened to Khashoggi, who has recently been living in the USA and who went into the consulate for documents he needed to get married. "We're going to get to the bottom of it and there will be severe punishment".

Sources close to the Turkish investigation have told Middle East Eye that Khashoggi was dragged from the consul general's office inside the consulate before he was brutally murdered by two men who cut up his body.

In a joint statement on Sunday, the foreign ministers of Britain, France, and Germany said they were treating the matter with the "utmost seriousness" and called for a "credible investigation" into the journalist's disappearance, adding that anyone who bears responsibility should be held to account.

USA senator Richard Blumenthal from WWE's home state of CT has called on WWE to "review and relook" at its relationship with Saudi Arabia.

In protest of Khashoggi's disappearance, several US businesses leaders have pulled out of next week's Future Investment Initiative in Riyadh, dubbed "Davos in the Desert", after the annual meeting of world economic interests in Switzerland. "Think of that, $110 billion".

"I would hope that WWE will recognize on its own a conscience and conviction, if there is proof Saudi officials approved and ordered this kind of killing", he said.
