Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi died after a brawl inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, Saudi Arabia announced Saturday.U.S. President Donald Trump hailed as a "great first step" Friday Saudi Arabia's explanation for the fate of a missing Saudi journalist.

"This was an operation where individuals ended up exceeding the authorities and responsibilities they had".

"There obviously was a tremendous mistake made, and what compounded the mistake was the attempt to try to cover up", he said, adding, "That is unacceptable in any government".

"He is moving toward a Saudi Arabia according to him, a Saudi Arabia according to Mohammed bin Salman only", said Khashoggi, who was himself a contributor to the Washington Post newspaper.

In a statement on Friday night, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said the USA will closely follow global investigations into Mr Khashoggi's death and will advocate for justice that is "timely, transparent and in accordance with all due process".

French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said many questions remained unanswered while German Chancellor Angela Merkel urged transparency, adding that "available reports on what happened in the Istanbul consulate are insufficient".

Corker said he was waiting for investigations to be completed and hoped that Turkey would share any audio tapes of the killing of Khashoggi in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.

Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland said in a statement issued Saturday night that the Saudis' "explanations" of the killing of Jamal Khashoggi "lack consistency and credibility". He also said that Prince Mohammed, defacto ruler of Saudi Arabia, was not responsible.

Saudi Arabia has arrested 18 people whom they claim are connected with the incident. The existence of such evidence has been reported in Turkish media in a series of leaks, though Turkish officials have yet to confirm they have recordings.

"We ought to suspend military sales, we ought to suspend certain security assistance and we ought to impose sanctions on any of those that were directly involved in this murder", Schiff said. Those having such links will be held accountable and brought to justice, it said.

Khashoggi, a prominent journalist and royal court insider for decades in Saudi Arabia, had written columns critical of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and the kingdom's direction while living in self-imposed exile in the U.S. He went to the Saudi consulate to obtain paperwork for his upcoming marriage.

His Treasury Secretary, Mnuchin, said he would not attend a Saudi investment conference on Tuesday, although he would still visit Riyadh as planned for talks with his counterpart there on joint efforts to counter terrorist financing. They said the "hypotheses" proposed so far in the Saudi investigation need to be backed by facts to be considered credible. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) labeled the Saudi account "insulting", arguing no one "analyzing this with any type of intelligent background" would believe "a fist fight led to a dismemberment with a bone saw".
