Donald Trump has formally invited Vladimir Putin to visit Washington DC next year, the United States national security adviser, John Bolton, has confirmed. However, that plan was scuttled amid an outcry from politicians who thought the timing was bad given the investigation into Russian meddling into the 2016 election hadn't been completed.
Bolton also revealed the president is planning to host Putin at the White House sometime beginning next year, saying the leaders will likely discuss the conflict between Georgia and the Kremlin.
The meeting in Washington was brought up after President Donald Trump's controversial summit with Putin in Helsinki.
Bolton, in a separate interview, strongly criticized Russian foreign policy, saying Moscow's behavior on the world stage was one of the reasons Washington had imposed sanctions on Russia and was now considering imposing more.
Putin last held a meeting with a US president on American soil in 2015 when he met Barack Obama on the sidelines of a U.N. General Assembly.
