National Security Adviser John Bolton says he discussed USA plans to withdraw from missile treaty with Russian Federation; national security correspondent Jennifer Griffin reports from the Pentagon.

Donald Trump has formally invited Vladimir Putin to visit Washington DC next year, the United States national security adviser, John Bolton, has confirmed. However, that plan was scuttled amid an outcry from politicians who thought the timing was bad given the investigation into Russian meddling into the 2016 election hadn't been completed.

Bolton also revealed the president is planning to host Putin at the White House sometime beginning next year, saying the leaders will likely discuss the conflict between Georgia and the Kremlin.

Bolton confirmed the invitation had been extended while speaking to reporters Friday in the former Soviet state of Georgia. "What the schedule of that is, we do not quite know yet".

The meeting in Washington was brought up after President Donald Trump's controversial summit with Putin in Helsinki.

Bolton, in a separate interview, strongly criticized Russian foreign policy, saying Moscow's behavior on the world stage was one of the reasons Washington had imposed sanctions on Russia and was now considering imposing more.

Putin last held a meeting with a US president on American soil in 2015 when he met Barack Obama on the sidelines of a U.N. General Assembly.

Putin has repeatedly said that improvements in U.S.

Putin and Trump are due to meet briefly in Paris next month, when they attend a centennial memorial service for Armistice Day, which marked the end of WW1.

Moreover, the US President strongly protested the fact that Germany pays Russian Federation for the construction of the controversial pipeline "Nord stream - 2", and at the same time asks Washington to protect her from Moscow.
