A Miss Thai Universe runner-up was among five people who died in the Leicester City helicopter crash.

"It is hard to put into words how much you have meant to this football club and to the city of Leicester", said Schmeichel.

While many foreign owners have been viewed with suspicion by their English club's fans - for reasons such as a lack of respect for supporters or their club's traditions - Vichai was held in the highest regard by the Leicester faithful.

UEFA and European football have offered their deepest sympathies to Leicester City following the tragic death of club chairman Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha in a helicopter accident outside the Premier League club's stadium on Saturday.

The Thai businessman was leaving the King Power Stadium after Leicester's 1-1 draw to West Ham United in a private helicopter when it crashed in the arena's vehicle park.

"The Club will issue a more detailed statement once further information has been established".

Vichai, one of Thailand's richest men, bought Leicester City in 2010 and six years later celebrated one of English football's greatest achievements when the club won the Premier League.

Images showed orange balls of flame engulfing the wreckage in the auto park at King Power Stadium - the scene of unbridled jubilation after Leicester's Premier League victory two years ago. "It turned silent, blades started spinning and then there was a big bang", freelance photographer Ryan Brown told BBC Radio 5 Live.

Small bouquets, soccer jerseys and flags were left by members of the public alongside a large image of the Hindu god Ganesh, which was also propped up among the flowers.

Goalkeeper Kasper Schemeichel, one of the stars of Leicester's remarkable Premier League title triumph in 2016, led the tributes from the team's players.

England legend Gary Lineker, a former Leicester player who was hosting the BBC's Match of the Day when the accident happened, tweeted: "That was the most hard @BBCMOTD I've ever hosted".

Sky Sports also reports that Leicester's director of football John Rudkin was not aboard the helicopter and, contrary to some reports on Saturday night, manager Claude Puel was not either. "A bad tragedy. Heartbreaking".

Srivaddhanaprabha, 60, had used the helicopter on matchdays to travel between the stadium and London.

"The Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) is leading the investigation into the accident and a cordon remains in place at the scene while enquiries continue".

Two pilots and a fifth person whose identity was not immediately known, the source said on Sunday. Doesn't seem like they have had much of a chance.

Leicester and England defender Harry Maguire posted on Twitter how Vichai had supported him at club and at global level during the World Cup, describing the Thai billionaire as "A truly great, kind, loving man who will be missed so much by everyone".

Languishing at the very bottom of the table for most of the 2014/15 season, the Foxes, as the team are nicknamed, then engineered what fans now fondly refer to as the "Great Escape", winning seven of their last nine matches.

More than 1,000 staff, fans at a corporate level and media were still inside the stadium when the tragedy happened.

Tributes also poured in from around the world of football.

Leicester were promoted to the top flight by winning the Championship in the 2013/14 season just two years before shocking the world by winning the Premier League.
