US to revoke visas of Saudis implicated in killing of writer

Turkish leader says Khashoggi's killing was planned in advance Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan speaks to supporters in Ankara on Oct. 22

Saudi Arabia's crown prince said on Wednesday the case of Jamal Khashoggi was "painful" and that "justice will prevail" following the killing of the Saudi journalist at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.

Trump said that while he's convinced Saudi King Salman was not involved in the murder, which Turkish officials have called "savage", he's not so confident that the prince was not apprised to the plan.

Earlier on Tuesday, the President told reporters at the White House that Saudi authorities had staged the "worst cover-up ever" over the incident, and that they had handled the matter badly. And they should be in big trouble.

The Saudi kingdom has provided conflicting accounts of what happened to Khashoggi, a United States resident and Washington Post contributor.

Saudi national Mr Khashoggi was killed after going to his country's consulate in Istanbul for a divorce certificate.

Amid pressure, Saudi Arabia acknowledged last week that the 59-year-old writer had died in what it said was a "fistfight".

Turkish police searched the kingdom's Istanbul consulate, and the consul general's residence, as well as hunting for evidence in an Istanbul forest.

Despite Pompeo's revelation that visas were being revoked, Trump said that Congress would take the lead in any retaliation against Saudi Arabia.

Turkish police crime scene investigators, looking for possible clues into the killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, work in an underground auto park, where authorities Monday found a vehicle belonging to the Saudi consulate, in Istanbul, Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2018.

The Associated Press reports that a US official, who refused to be identified by name, said Central Intelligence Agency director Gina Haspel is in Turkey to discuss the case.

His comments on Wednesday were made at the Future Investment Initiative in the Saudi capital Riyadh.

"It was a total fiasco", Trump said.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the move to revoke visas was just a first step.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan also failed to mention the audio recording during a highly-anticipated speech about Khashoggi's killing on Tuesday.

The killing also overshadowed a major investment forum that opened in Riyadh Tuesday.

Trump said he wanted to believe Prince Mohammed when he said that lower level officials were to blame for the killing at the Saudi mission.

The PM-designate has repeatedly denied that he was "detained" in Saudi Arabia, stressing that what happened is "a page turned".
