Former ICC chief calls for new blood at Cricket Australia - Mornings

Former Australian captain Steve Waugh blames lack of punishment for ball tampering scandal 'Arrogant' Cricket Australia slammed in damning report

The Australian Cricketers' Association has called for the immediate lifting of the bans now being served by disgraced cricketers Steve Smith, David Warner and Cameron Bancroft, who have already been "punished enough" for their roles in the ball-tampering scandal.

Australian Cricketer's Association were looking to lessen the bans on these three players after the cultural report of Cricket Australia.

In March, three players including captain, Steve Smith and vice captain David Warner received 12 month bans for ball tampering during a test match against South Africa.

"Given there is now independent verification that CA's system and culture were contributory factors, the ACA calls for the lifting of the board-imposed penalties on Steve Smith, David Warner and Cameron Bancroft", ACA chief Dyer told a news conference in Melbourne.

"Common sense, common decency, basic fairness, proportionality and natural justice demand that the punishment is reduced".

The Newlands Test between South Africa and Australia at Cape Town earlier in 2018 was overshadowed by the ball-tampering scandal in which Bancroft was caught on camera trying to scuff the ball with a yellow sandpaper.

Meanwhile, former Australian Cricket Board chairman Malcolm Speed has urged Taylor to usurp chairman David Peever, who he describes as a "corporate world" figure, at CA.

"We've got start rebuilding the cricket team to start winning games for Australia and get a cricket team that Australia can be proud of".

There is the possibility Smith and Warner could now be allowed to play in the domestic summer for their states and BBL teams in a bid to be ready for next year's Ashes series.

ACA president Greg Dyer said there were a range of suggestions in terms of when the bans could end.

Steve Smith and David Warner have been given a ban up to a year, which means they will be eligible to play all forms of cricket from April 2019.

And as ABC's national sports correspondent Mary Gearin pointed out when the scandal broke, Australia's cricketers enjoy a unique place in the affections of their fans. "I have been friends with the recent chairmen of Australian cricket". We've got to make Australians proud.

The review warned the ball-tampering incident should not be seen as an aberration of the failure of a handful of players.

He also said he's "never seen a report that is as harsh in its commentary" as the Longstaff review is of CA.

"There's a range of different options and there's many different ones which have been spoken about, not just by us but by others", he said on SEN.

CA has also been urged to conduct a major review of its high-performance unit - Howard is leaving next year - and encouraged to have anyone associated with the high-performance unit banned from taking part in industrial negotiations with players.

The ACA has made it clear its campaign is not being driven by the players.
