The deaths of two Saudi sisters who recently sought asylum in the US and whose bodies were discovered fully clothed and duct-taped together at the feet and waist last Wednesday on the banks of the Hudson River are under investigation.

Since then, the New York Police Department (NYPD) has determined that Tala Farea, 16, and Rotana Farea, 22, were sisters from Saudi Arabia living in Virginia, and at least one of them was reported missing two months ago.

A source at the Saudi Arabian Embassy in Washington, DC told DailyMail.com Rotana's sister Tala had won a full scholarship to study at Dar Al-Fikr, a top private school in Jeddah.

The police department released new passport-style photographs on Wednesday showing the two young women with headscarves over their hair.

Police sources say they do not believe the sisters died by jumping off the George Washington Bridge, six miles upriver from where their bodies were found by Riverside Park.

New York City police released images of Tala Farea, 16, and Rotana Farea, 22, who were found dead on October 24 near 68th Street and Riverside Park in Manhattan's Upper West Side neighborhood.

The statement said that the case was still under investigation and a forensic report stating the cause of the death hadn't been issued as yet.

The Saudi Consulate General in New York City declined to answer questions about the Farea sisters when pressed by Law&Crime.

They were pronounced dead at the scene along the riverbanks on Manhattan's Upper West Side, police said.

"I'm confident that when the complete investigation is done we'll have a good idea of what exactly transpired", said Detective Dermot Shea.

Neither woman's body had immediately obvious signs of trauma, and after initially suspecting that the pair might have jumped from the George Washington Bridge, cops cooled on the theory Tuesday.

A relative tells Arab News that the sisters were part of a happy family.

Rather than live on campus like many of her classmates, Rotana traveled back to her home in Falls Church, Virginia where she lived with her mother, brother and Tala. Tala had been reported missing from Fairfax since August 24 and was suspected to be accompanied by Rotan, police said.

Police said the sisters left their family home and were placed in a shelter after an earlier disappearance, in December 2017.
