At one particularly heated point in the conference, Mr Trump got into a tense exchange with Jim Acosta from television news channel CNN, which led to the president calling him a "terrible person".

President Trump opened his first press conference after the midterm elections - the longest press conference of his presidency - with talk about bipartisanship, but he quickly turned combative, sparring with reporters.

Acosta addressed the migrant caravan of almost 4,000 Central Americans, mostly women and children, who are walking through Mexico seeking asylum in the U.S. In the past, Trump has made comments, which have since been refuted, that terrorists and gang members are among the travelers.

"You should let me run the country", Trump said.

After Acosta asked about the investigation of Russia's involvement in the 2016 election and Trump tried to turn to Garrett.

"That's false", Trump said as a reporter began his question.

"The way you treat Sarah Huckabee is disgusting", he said.

Trump has been challenged on his power to restrict immigration throughout his presidency - and the caravan is no different.

"When you talk about division, it's people like this who cause division", he said of the reporter. Mike Coffman, Barbara Comstock, and Mia Love. "To be honest. You aren't the best", he said.

To PBS NewsHour's Yamiche Alcindor, who asked him about white nationalists emboldened by Trump labeling himself a "nationalist", Trump said he was insulted.

When asked why Representative Jeff Flake of Arizona, who was not a head of any committe, retired, Trump replied: "I retired him".

CNN responded to the incident saying the president's "attacks on the press have gone too far".

Trump explained he wants immigrants to come to America, because its expanding economy needs the workers, but they need to come legally. Mr. Trump also said he thought it was possible that divided government could be productive and produce stronger legislation.

"I came in here as a nice person wanting to answer questions and I had people jumping out of their seats screaming questions at me", said Trump, who talked for almost 90 minutes despite the run-ins with reporters. Trump adds that Democrats have "nothing, zero" on him. "Just sit down, please".

To Jim Acosta: 'CNN should be ashamed of themselves having you working for them.

"You are a rude, bad person", the president said.

The president said his party enjoyed "tremendous success" despite "a very dramatic fundraising disadvantage [and] very hostile media coverage, to put it mildly". The way that you treat other people is terrible.

Some reporters pushed him on whether his campaign rhetoric on migrants from central America was divisive, as well as the Russian Federation investigation - but Mr Trump aggressively pushed back.
