This just in: According to Inquirer.net, Imelda Marcos "has been found guilty of seven counts of graft by the Sandinganbayan's Fifth Division".

The case has been pending with the anti-graft court for 27 years.

An arrest warrant was ordered for Marcos because she failed to appear in court.

He said the police do not give special attention to any detainee in the facility.

The anti-graft Sandiganbayan court on Friday sentenced the 89-year-old to six to 11 years jail for each of the seven counts for violating an anti-corruption law when she illegally funnelled about $US200 million ($A275 million) to Swiss foundations in the 1970s.

The court barred Marcos from holding public office as part of the sentence.

Imelda has registered as a candidate next May to succeed her daughter, Imee Marcos, 62, as governor of Ilocos Norte, the stronghold of the still powerful Marcos family.

Marcos died in 1989 while still in exile.

Rosales said the decision was a huge setback to efforts by the Marcos family to revise history by denying numerous atrocities under the dictatorship, and urged Filipinos to fight all threats against democracy and civil liberties.

Former Philippine Human Rights Commission chair Loretta Ann Rosales, who was raped and tortured by soldiers of the Marcos regime, told ABS-CBN Network that she was "jumping up and down in joy in disbelief" at the guilty verdict.

Further complicating the political situation is that Marcos managed to win a seat in the House of Representatives four times despite these long-standing legal complaints, and is running for governor of the Ilocos Norte province, a position now held by her daughter Imee.

Imelda is running for governor in Ilocos Norte, a province in the northern tip of the Philippines' main Luzon Island, in the 2019 midterm elections. They have denied any wrongdoing and have successfully fought many other corruption cases.

Ferdinand Marcos ruled the Philippines for two decades, placing the country under martial law in 1972, during which time thousands of opponents were jailed, killed or disappeared.

The Marcos family is a known supporter of President Rodrigo Duterte.

Presidential Spokesman Salvador Panelo said the Palace respects the decision of the Sandiganbayan on the case of Marcos and recognizes that such ruling should remind government officials to serve people with integrity.
