WASHINGTON, Nov 9 - President Donald Trump said on Friday he had not discussed the probe into Russia's meddling in the 2016 USA presidential election with Matt Whitaker before appointing him as acting attorney general, and it was up to Whitaker whether he wanted to be involved with the investigation.

The protest was part of the nationally organized "Nobody is Above the Law" movement, which vowed to hold protests nationwide if President Donald Trump took any steps that could jeopardize special counsel Robert Mueller's Russian Federation investigation.

Donald Trump told reporters on Friday that he has not discussed the Mueller investigation with his new acting attorney general, Matt Whitaker.

Congressional Democrats have already called on Whitaker to recuse himself from overseeing the investigation.

Matthew Whitaker's future at the helm of the Justice Department appeared uncertain at best Friday as President Donald Trump denied even knowing the man he had named acting attorney general just two days earlier. "Why didn't they get him Senate-confirmed?" asked Trump.

But if Mueller is still gathering evidence on other matters such as Trump's business relations with Russians going back before the 2016 election, Whitaker may be able to stifle that, ruling it out of the realm of the original mandate.

Whitaker was appointed to the post by President George W. Bush in 2004 and later confirmed.

Toomey said he had no reason to think the Mueller probe would be disrupted.

He also said he had not spoken with Whitaker about Mueller's probe. His job as Mr. Sessions' chief of staff did not require Senate confirmation.

U.S. Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer cast doubt on the legality of Whitaker's appointment and sent Trump a list of questions about the move.

Whitaker, speaking on CNN in 2017, said he had respect for Mueller and then went on to say he would be surprised if the special counsel had any concerns about the termination of Sessions and its effect on the investigation. In many instances, that office does not require a Justice Department official to recuse, but suggests a course of action. "And the people have to speak out as you're doing today". That contradicted Trump's remarks on Fox News last month, when he called Whitaker "a great guy" and said, "I mean, I know Matt Whitaker".

In a cosigned letter, the attorneys general said that Special Counsel Robert Mueller's probe "must proceed free from interference". "At various opportunities, you have suggested cutting the special counsel's budget or limiting his authority to follow lines of inquiry".
